My experience with rails development - Html options with select_hour helper

Nowadays i am showing more interest with twitter bootstrap framework and started implementing in our projects. After facing lot of challenges with Html5 & CSS3, it gives me a lot more confident in working with that.

I faced a trivial issue while working with rails but kills more time to fix it. A quick idea raised to share that and here is the post.

Issue:

After updating the existing project with twitter bootstrap based styles, all the html elements size gets increased and it looks good too. But i felt i want to reduce the select box which i have used with select_hour helper tag of rails. And the issue raised that even though i sent the html options to the method, i couldn’t able to reduce the size.

How i solve that?

Started searching through the suggestions from various developer community for solving this issue. Gone through the rails documentation over and over and still i was not able to reduce the size of the html select box. I updated directly in the rendered html code from the rails through inspect element of chrome(Thanks Google for this awesome options which is helping the developers a lot…). It helped to narrow down the issue. Stack overflow came into rescue with this thread.

Now i am able to apply this in normal rails select tag. But the same not working for the select_hour. Still i continued the search without giving up. Now again there is one more thread from stack overflow in which somebody faced more or less the same issue what i faced. But there is no clear solution given for that. Anyway it gave me some confident that i am close to the solution.

Gave some more try and i found a final thread from stack overflow which gives me a clear idea of the solution for my issue. I applied that and i found the solution for the thing that i spent almost 3 hours continuously.

The solution is that, we need to properly know how to use the options in the rails helper methods. I tried the following options,

:html => {:class => ‘span2’}

to the rails helper method call. But we need to pass directly the options within a hash as like below.

select_hour(datetime, {}, {:class => ‘span2’})

And now i am able to get the expected result as the select box width is in control.

Lessons learnt:

Read the rails documentation correctly and also practice how to use the methods along with optional arguments. Also, there will be some solution available and give it one more try whenever your mind stop proceeding with that. Definitely you will get the solution.

Also I have created the solution for the thread in stack overflow which helps me to narrow down the issue. This will definitely helpful for someone who will come across this issue.

My experience with rails development - rake assets:precompile

As we have released our rails based startup app, our team now focussed towards the payment integration.

While working with the UI integration of the payment screens, i faced an issue which makes me to stuck up with that for an hour. I just want to share my experience about the issue and how i solved that.

Issue:

There are some new images, style classes and javascript code that are updated for these new screens. So i just add as usual to the corresponding folders in the app/asset directory and i tried refreshing my screen for updated changes. But the new changes are not reflected. So i tried to clear the cookies and restart the server. But still i couldn’t able to see the changes in the required pages. Normally, there is no need to compile the asset files while working with the development mode. But i don’t know why this problem occurred and i got stuck with that. I thought that, the files which i added are not compiled due to some problem and hence i precompiled the asset files in development mode which is not usually required. But still, i am not able to resolve that issue.

How i solve that?

I did some google search and i found from stackoverflow about this rails assets pre-compile issue that the assets files if it is generated previously, needs to be deleted. But i am working in development mode and i am in deep thinking that how come these files get added. I searched for these new files and with the help of the git checkout tool, i found these asset files in the public/assets folder. Now i got to remember that, i did some rake assets:precompile in order to check for some issue with the deployment team. Due to that it was created. Finally, i deleted the files, and the issue got solved.

Lessons learnt:

Lessons learnt from this issue is that, whenever a request comes for the asset file, it first looks in the public/assets folder and if it exists, it will respond with that file. If it is not there, then it will try to compile the file from the app/assets directory. This helps in the production environment for providing the fast response for the assets.

Hope it will be helpful for those who come across this type of issue. Soon, will come up with more experiences in the upcoming posts.
